OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop application for Linux users, fulfilling a frequently requested feature from the open-source community. The app, now available in preview worldwide, allows Linux users to access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.
Initially, the application will support specific desktop variants of Ubuntu (24.04 and 26.04 LTS), Debian (13), and Fedora (43 and 44). OpenAI noted that while hundreds of Linux distributions exist, the chosen ones serve as a base for many other compatible "downstream" distributions.
This move places OpenAI slightly behind competitor Anthropic, which released a Claude desktop app for Linux approximately one month prior, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
