JCB and Resona Holdings are collaborating on the development and commercialization of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) payment technology, aiming to revolutionize payment experiences, particularly for public transportation. The initiative seeks to enable hands-free transactions, allowing passengers to board buses without the need to tap a card or scan a code, with their smartphones remaining in their pockets or bags. This UWB technology leverages accurate device location and high-speed data communication capabilities.
The project, described as the world's first full-scale effort for UWB payment commercialization, is set to begin technology tests and demonstrations in 2026 with various partners and merchants. The companies are actively involved with the FiRa Consortium, an organization dedicated to standardizing UWB communication technology. They aim to create an open infrastructure compatible with competitor solutions, potentially establishing UWB as a universal standard.
JCB and Resona envision that UWB payments will not only streamline transactions but also facilitate the automated exchange of granular customer data, such as loyalty points, preferences, and even allergen information, simultaneously with the payment. For merchants, this technology promises operational efficiencies, including labor savings, precision marketing through personalized offers, and enhanced VIP customer service.
The strategic roadmap includes small-scale commercial operations targeted for 2027, with a full market rollout anticipated in 2028. This initiative builds upon a prior partnership known as the "Hands-free Payment" project, and also includes a separate project, "Chikazuite-Check," launched by JCB and iMago using UWB/BLE technology to enhance shopping experiences.
