Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI research lab founded by former OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, has announced a significant long-term partnership with Nvidia. The collaboration aims to scale SSI's research efforts in developing safe, aligned artificial superintelligence.
The deal includes a substantial, undisclosed multi-billion dollar investment from Nvidia, which will provide SSI with access to the chipmaker's Vera Rubin GPU platform. This is expected to increase SSI's compute resources by an order of magnitude, enabling the company to pursue its research goals more effectively.
Sutskever stated that the partnership will allow SSI to scale its research, which he believes is worthy of expansion. The company is focused on a direct research approach, prioritizing alignment and true general reasoning over commercial product releases or short-term revenue. This strategy contrasts with the rapid commercialization pressures faced by other AI labs.
Nvidia, already an investor in SSI, expressed interest in the startup's closely guarded research and will collaborate with SSI to advance its current and future compute platforms. SSI had previously partnered with Google Cloud to support its research endeavors.
Founded two years ago, SSI has raised a total of $7 billion and is valued at $32 billion post-money, with backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, and Sequoia Capital Partners.
