Guthrie AI, a startup that leverages artificial intelligence and a global workforce to assist construction contractors in submitting bids, has successfully closed its initial seed funding round, securing $4 million. The investment was spearheaded by Chicago Ventures, with additional contributions from York IE, MVP Capital Partners, and Flybridge.
The company focuses on streamlining estimation and other preconstruction processes, initially serving window glazing firms before expanding its services to other specialty contractors. President Ted Baumgardner stated that the platform's value proposition allows contractors to increase their bidding capacity by approximately 70% per person.
While Guthrie AI is developing its proprietary AI platform, current automation stands at about 10%, with the remaining 90% of services provided by its personnel, comprising domestic workers and approximately 60 overseas employees in India and the Philippines. Each client is assigned a dedicated bid assistant to manage the extensive paperwork involved in securing new business.
Baumgardner emphasized that Guthrie AI is not solely a software company but offers a hybrid solution combining technology and human expertise to deliver desired outcomes. The newly acquired funds will be allocated towards hiring more engineers, primarily in the U.S., to enhance the platform's automation capabilities. The company aims to increase its engineering team from six to between 10 and 12.
Expanding automation involves addressing the complexities of construction documents, which require spatial reasoning beyond current AI models' capacity. The existing automated features include identifying relevant bid sections and managing post-bid correspondence. Baumgardner confirmed that the investors are now equity partners, though he retains majority ownership.
This pivot to venture capital marks a significant step for Guthrie AI, which had been self-funded through its cash flow for the past two years. The company has experienced rapid growth, with Baumgardner recalling the absence of engineers on his team just a year prior. The founder, a U.S. Marine veteran and MBA graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, anticipates delivering a substantial return to investors over the next seven to 10 years, aiming to build a transformative company in the construction industry.
