Google is on the verge of launching another product with over a billion users, as its AI assistant Gemini has reached more than 950 million monthly users. This significant growth, tripling its user base from the previous year, positions Gemini to more closely rival OpenAI's ChatGPT, which achieved 1 billion monthly active users in June.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the popularity of new agentic features like Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, noting the rapid pace of feature development. Gemini has also established a strong presence on iOS, with its app downloaded over 137 million times in the last 12 months, boosted by features like the Nano Banana image generation model.
According to Sensor Tower's 'State of AI' report for H1 2026, ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants has fallen below 50% for the first time, while Gemini's share has climbed to 27.7%.
