Scientists have successfully created hypoallergenic beagles using CRISPR gene editing, a development that could offer a future option for individuals with dog allergies. Matt Walker, a geneticist involved in the project, can now interact with Bailey, one of the gene-edited beagles, without experiencing allergic reactions. The process, which took place at Kindred Companion Sciences, involved editing dog skin cells and then using the edited genetic code to create two female pups, Bailey and her twin Alfie, born in September 2024.
Initial allergy tests on Walker showed no reaction to extracts from Alfie and Bailey's saliva and dander, a stark contrast to his reactions to other breeds. This research marks the first time this gene-editing approach has been successfully applied to dogs, with scientists noting that all dogs share the same allergy-causing gene that was targeted.
However, experts caution that it will take years before such pets could be commercially available.
