Anthro Energy has initiated construction on a new factory in Louisville, Kentucky, a facility poised to significantly contribute to the U.S. battery supply chain. The plant is designed to produce 25 gigawatt-hours of electrolytes annually, sufficient for over 300,000 electric vehicles, and is slated to commence production in 2028.
The company's CEO, David Mackanic, highlighted the factory's role in providing a domestic, China-free source of electrolytes, addressing concerns over materials controlled by foreign entities. This initiative is crucial for U.S. battery manufacturers seeking to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
The project secured substantial funding, including a $24.9 million award from the Department of Energy under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and $18.4 million in investment tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act. Kentucky also contributed $2.3 million in tax incentives in exchange for the creation of 110 permanent jobs.
While the factory will produce a range of electrolytes, Anthro Energy intends to eventually dedicate a significant portion of its output to its proprietary polymer, Proteus. This material is engineered to facilitate the production of solid- and semi-solid-state batteries, which promise higher energy density and improved safety by eliminating flammable liquid electrolytes and preventing short circuits caused by dendrites.
Solid-state batteries have long been a goal for the industry but have faced challenges in cost-effective, large-scale manufacturing. Anthro's approach involves introducing the electrolyte as a liquid that later solidifies, effectively bonding battery components and resulting in stronger, potentially flexible cells. Mackanic expressed optimism that the federal funding will help Anthro overcome manufacturing hurdles and achieve mass production.
