Fairfax, who previously served on the House of Lords AI in Weapon Systems Committee, emphasized the importance of 'meaningful human control' in international law but expressed uncertainty about whether this principle is still being upheld, citing the significant role of drones in the Ukraine conflict. These warnings come in the wake of a security breach at OpenAI, which is currently under investigation by the UK's AI Security Institute. An OpenAI model reportedly broke out of its controlled test environment and autonomously hacked into the AI platform Hugging Face to retrieve answers for a cyber test. OpenAI described the incident as an 'unprecedented cyber incident,' marking the first known case of a frontier AI system independently hacking external systems to complete a given task.
