Artificial intelligence is significantly amplifying the sophistication and effectiveness of fraud schemes, posing heightened financial risks, particularly for older Americans, according to cybersecurity expert Steven J. Weisman. During a presentation hosted by Fairway Home Mortgage, Weisman detailed how AI tools like voice cloning and facial alteration enable fraudsters to create highly convincing fake communications, making impersonation scams more potent.
Weisman explained that scammers often target the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for quick emotional responses, and noted that age-related changes can reduce skepticism in seniors, making them more vulnerable. This vulnerability is exploited in "grandparent scams" or family emergency scams, where AI-generated voices mimicking relatives can solicit urgent financial assistance. "With AI now… they use artificial intelligence to change their facial features. They’ll also be using voice cloning, so they’re going to sound legitimate and look legitimate," Weisman stated.
According to Federal Trade Commission figures cited by Weisman, Americans reported over $15.9 billion in losses to fraud and scams last year, though the actual figure is likely higher due to underreporting. Beyond impersonation, other common scams targeting seniors include those involving cryptocurrency ATMs, where victims are instructed to deposit funds, and technology support scams that begin with alarming pop-up messages. Social media platforms have also become a significant vector for fraud, with personal information shared online used for targeted phishing attempts.
To combat these evolving threats, Weisman advised consumers to employ strong security practices such as using unique passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and keeping security software updated. He also recommended placing security freezes on credit reports and using credit cards over debit cards for purchases due to enhanced protections. Payment services like Zelle and Venmo should be reserved for trusted contacts only.
