AegisAI, a startup founded by former Google security executives Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo, has secured $36 million in Series A funding to develop AI agents designed to combat the growing threat of AI-driven spear phishing attacks. The company's technology analyzes incoming messages for subtle anomalies that traditional rule-based systems often miss, aiming to provide a more effective defense against sophisticated cyber threats.
The fresh capital, which brings AegisAI's total funding to $49 million, was led by Battery Ventures with participation from existing investors Accel and Foundation Capital. AegisAI's approach leverages AI agents that mimic human analysis to detect malicious emails, a strategy deemed necessary as AI-powered attacks are reported to bypass existing controls more than half the time.
Since its launch less than a year ago, AegisAI has gained traction with dozens of customers, including notable companies like crypto payments firm Mash, AI startup LangChain, and Google-owned platform Lokker. The startup's founders, who previously worked on Google's safe browsing technology and reCAPTCHA, believe their agentic-driven defense can displace legacy email security tools.
