Alaska's top elections official has initiated an investigation into a U.S. Senate candidate who shares the same name as the incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom is examining allegations that Daniel James Sullivan Jr. filed his candidacy with the intent to deceive voters.
Dahlstrom stated that credible allegations suggest the challenger coordinated with another campaign to exploit the shared first and last name and party affiliation. The investigation aims to determine if Sullivan intended to confuse voters into mistakenly casting their ballot for him instead of the incumbent. Such actions, if proven, could constitute voter deception and infringe upon the rights of another candidate.
The challenger, identified as a former U.S. Forest Service worker and elementary school teacher, launched his campaign website advertising "Dan Sullivan Challenges Dan Sullivan for U.S. Senate Seat." Dahlstrom has requested that Sullivan provide a sworn affidavit by Wednesday addressing his past Republican Party affiliation, voter registration names, and any intentional mimicry of the senator's website and logo. She also inquired about any interactions with consultants, other Senate candidates, or Democratic Party agents regarding his candidacy, and whether he would object to appearing on the ballot as "Sullivan, Daniel James Jr. (non-incumbent)."
