- Potential mechanisms include reducing inflammation, regulating insulin signaling, and direct tumor biology engagement.
Growing evidence presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting suggests that GLP-1 drugs, widely used for weight loss and diabetes management, may offer protection against many types of cancer. Over two dozen studies analyzed clinical records and real-world databases, finding that patients taking GLP-1 medications like Novo Nordisk's Wegovy/Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Zepbound/Mounjaro showed lower risks of developing cancer, slower disease progression, better survival rates, and improved responses to some treatments compared to non-users. Researchers hypothesize that mechanisms such as reducing inflammation, regulating insulin signaling, and potentially interacting directly with tumor biology may contribute to these protective effects. Specific studies highlighted reduced risks for breast cancer, metastatic disease in lung, breast, colorectal, and liver cancers, and improved survival across six tumor types including breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, liver, and kidney cancers. Some evidence also suggests a potential interaction with immunotherapies.
